Aqua Fitness Instructor

POSITION SUMMARY
At the Y, we purposefully engage members throughout their health and wellness journeys. Aqua fitness is one of many ways the Y support members on their path to achieving health and wellness goals. Instructors teach classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

The YMCA of Rock River Valley has a responsibility to provide safe and secure programs and services for our community. The YMCA is a leader in child abuse prevention to support the safety of children in our care.

  • You'll support the commitment of the YMCA to child abuse prevention by:
  • Report any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor.
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children.
  • Report any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor.
  • Complete all child abuse prevention training as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  2. Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  3. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members. Helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  4. Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  5. Follows YMCA policies and procedures. Responds to emergency situations and assists lifeguards as directed.
  6. Attends staff meetings and trainings to stay current with latest fitness trends and educational information.
  7. Instructs scheduled class(es) at least 90% of each quarterly session. When unable to work, instructors are responsible for obtaining their substitutes from the current staff list and notifying their supervisor of arrangements.
  8. Creates a noncompetitive and inclusive atmosphere welcoming to all members and staff. Ensures a strong focus on character development and diversity, equity and inclusion throughout programming.
  9. Assesses each class to determine their ability to follow your instructions. Adjusts the workout to the various skill levels of class participants. Offers exercise modifications frequently.
  10. Changes music and movements frequently. Seeks to promote retention with each class.
  11. Reports damaged equipment or safety hazards promptly.
  12. Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Rock River Valley.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Age of 18 years old.
  • Preferred National Certifications: Y-USA Aqua Fitness or YUSA Aqua Arthritis or AEA (Aquatic Educators Association)
  • Completion of assigned Y-USA courses within 90 days of hire: Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y, I Hear You: Service with CARE, Principles of Member Health and Wellness, and Group Exercise at the Y.
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid required within 90 days.
  • Praesidium Academy Trainings
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations.
  • Proven track record of developing authentic and deepened relationships with others.

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

Position 1
Part Time, Non-Exempt
Northeast Family YMCA
Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:30 AM-12:45 PM (negotiable)
Specific Class: Aqua Dance or Similar Style
$15.00 per hour

Position 2
Part Time, Non-Exempt
Northeast Family YMCA and SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA
Hours vary, availability to sub based on candidate availability (minimum of 2 shifts per month)
$15.00 per hour
