Swim Lesson Instructor

Location: Rockford, IL

POSITION SUMMARY
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. Regardless of primary assignment, this position is expected to rotate between all YMCA pool locations.

  • You'll support the commitment of the YMCA to child abuse prevention by:
  • Report any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor.
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children.
  • Report any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor.
  • Complete all child abuse prevention training as required.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, utilizing YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor V6 curriculum, lesson guides, and other toolkit materials.
  2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents. Helps students and parents connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
  3. Conveys information on Aquatics programs and schedules, and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs.
  4. Maintains records as required including attendance and progress reports.
  5. Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
  6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary. Responds to emergency situations and assists lifeguards as directed.
  7. Organizes and puts away class equipment.
  8. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned.
  9. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  10. Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and fellow staff.
  11. Supports department special events by hosting games and interacting with families as schedule allows
  12. Meets attendance and punctuality requirements as outlined in the department handbook
  13. Ensures a strong focus on character development and diversity, equity and inclusion throughout programming.
  14. Reports damaged equipment or safety hazards promptly to deck lead or supervisor
  15. Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Rock River Valley.

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

2 Positions

Position 1
Part-Time, Non-Exempt
SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA
Saturdays 8:30 am-12:00 pm
Additional hours may be available Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 4:15-7:00 pm
Willingness to act as a substitute or offer private lessons based on availability
$15.00 per hour

Position 2
Part-Time, Non-Exempt
Northeast Family YMCA
Thursdays 4:15-7:00 pm and Saturdays 8:30 am - 12:00 pm
Additional hours may be available Monday and Wednesday 4:15-7:00 pm
Willingness to act as a substitute or offer private lessons based on availability
$15.00 per hour
