Summer Tutor

POSITION SUMMARY

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Summer Tutor will lead the on-site leadership and training of a supplemental math program within youth programming that seeks to provide intervention and decrease the negative outcome of dropping out of school and having few career-readiness skills. Summer Tutors will collaborate with program staff to increase participants’ academic confidence and skill. This position is grant funded and supports year-round, grant-funded programming.

  • You'll support the commitment of the YMCA to child abuse prevention by:
  • Report any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor.
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children.
  • Report any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor.
  • Complete all child abuse prevention training as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Provide on-site leadership of curriculum into the YMCA youth and teen programing.
  2. Gathers all activities and supplies necessary for scheduled day-to-day activities for assigned location.
  3. Works collaboratively and communicates with Good Shepherd Leadership.
  4. Trains and develops program staff to support the program and to make curriculum modifications when needed.
  5. Leads staff to develop a cohesive team.
  6. Schedules, observes and evaluates the effectiveness of team and curriculum. Coaches staff and updates curriculum and schedule as needed.
  7. Provides weekly curriculum lesson plan.
  8. Practice good listening skills. Take ownership of any issues that arise and resolve them to the best of your ability, and in a professional manner.
  9. Collaborate with school administration, school district, and other community agencies in order to create a successful program.
  10. Follows best practice standards which include, but are not limited to, safety.
  11. Gathers data bi-weekly as required by the grant for assigned location.
  12. Develops and maintains open, friendly, cooperative, and respectful relationships with families and partners.
  13. Supports programs under the allocated grants to reach the goals and objectives stated. Facilitates surveying and reporting on behalf on grant management aims.
  14. Ensures a strong focus on character development and diversity, equity and inclusion throughout programming.
  15. Reports damaged equipment or safety hazards promptly.
  16. Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Rock River Valley.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experienced tutor or classroom teaching experience required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leader with experience in building successful teams.
  • CPR, AED and First Aid Certifications required within 90 days.
  • Praesidium Academy trainings.
  • May be required to pass a fingerprint background check per grant requirements.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations.
  • Proven track record of developing authentic and deepened relationships with others.

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

2 Positions
Part Time, Non-Exempt, Grant-Funded
Monday- Friday, 9:00 am - 11:00 am
$33.00 per hour

Must be available for Summer Camp training and camp dates:
Summer Camp Training: June 10-14
Summer Camp: June 17-August 16
