Tumbling Instructor

Department: Youth & Family
Location: Rockford, IL


This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Tumbling Instructor provides leadership and planning of tumbling programs for different age groups. The instructor supervises a group of youth and/or adults and leads a positive, nurturing environment for children. Positively promotes YMCA youth program information with parents.

  1. Instructs class lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA policies and guidelines.
  2. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential program volunteers.
  3. Supervises a group of youth and/or adults to ensure their health and safety.
  4. Assists supervisor in development of lesson plans and routines for classes. Maintains class records in an organized manner, including attendance, progress of participants, waivers, forms, schedules, etc.
  5. Attends staff meetings, trainings and events as scheduled.
  6. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  7. Organizes and puts away needed gymnastics equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
  8. Additional duties as assigned. 


  1. Knowledge and prior experience in gymnastics, tumbling, dance, cheer or related sport.
  2. Demonstrated ability to teach the development of skills and proper technique to others without supervision. Effective leadership skills and ability to motivate youth.
  3. Certifications: CPR, Basic First Aid certification.
  4. Attend Child Abuse Prevention, and Safety & Emergency Training
  5. At least 16 years of age.
  6. Ability to instruct and observe participants and actively participate in activity. 
  7. Ability to lift equipment, and to lift and/or spot a small to average size child.
