Lifeguard (Rockford and Loves Park)

The Y is now hiring lifeguards!

At the Y, people of all ages and backgrounds come to learn to swim, for water safety education and to meet their health and wellness goals in the pool. Lifeguards are essential to ensuring a safe environment for those individuals. The Lifeguard creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

  1. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
  2. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports as required.
  3. Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
  4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
  5. Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
  6. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
  7. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  8. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
  1.  Minimum age of 16
  2.  Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration
  3.  Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent
  4.  Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date
  5.  Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
  6.  Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards

Physical demands

  • Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
  • Must be able to remain alert.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
  • Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
  • Part time; Shifts vary
  • Mondays-Fridays
  • 4:40am-8:00am
  • 8am-12pm
  • 12pm-4pm
  • 4:00pm-7:00/8:00pm
  • 6:00pm-9:00pm
  • 7:00pm-10:00pm
  • Weekends
  • Northeast Family YMCA- Saturdays anytime between 6am-6pm Sundays- 8am-6pm
  • $10.00-10.50/hr
  • $12.00/hr during extended hours
