The Silver Sneaker Instructor leads group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. Effectively builds community within the class. Provides options as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs.

The YMCA of Rock River Valley has a responsibility to provide safe and secure programs and services for our community. The YMCA is a leader in child abuse prevention to support the safety of children in our care.

  • You'll support the commitment of the YMCA to child abuse prevention by:
  • Report any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor.
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children.
  • Report any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor.
  • Complete all child abuse prevention training as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  2. Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  3. Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  4. Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  5. Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  6. Attend staff meetings and training to stay current with latest fitness trends and educational information.
  7. Instruct your scheduled class at least 90% of each quarterly session.
  8. When unable to work, instructors are responsible for obtaining their substitutes from the current staff list and notify supervisor of arrangements.
  9. Create a noncompetitive atmosphere.
  10. Assess each class to determine their ability to follow your instructions. Adjust the workout to the various skill levels of class participants. Offer exercise options frequently.
  11. Change music and movements frequently. Seek to make each class that will keep members “coming back”.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Required certifications: CPR, AED. Tivity Foundations Training is required of all SS Instructors. Certification in areas of expertise, Classic, Circuit, Yoga etc.
  2. Instructors must earn 8 SilverSneaker continuing education credits every 2 years to maintain Foundations training.
  3. If you do not maintain your Foundations Certification by earning 8 credits every 2 years, then you will be out of compliance.
  4. At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.
  5. Bloodborne Pathogens & Child Abuse Prevention training required prior to hire.
  6. CPR/AED & First Aid certification required within 90 days.

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

1 Position

Part Time, Non-Exempt
Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd
Flexible - Mon-Fri between 8 am and 11:30 pm
$15.00-$17.00 per hour
The base wage is $15.00 per hour. Instructors are eligible for additional compensation of $1.00 per hour for professional certifications held for classes they teach at the YMCA.
