Aquatics Lead

POSITION SUMMARY
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Aquatics Lead creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. The Aquatics Lead assists with overseeing fellow staff, office work, special events, programming, training events, staff audits, and other duties as assigned. In accordance with YMCA policies and procedures, Aquatics Leads will ensure safe and quality program operations that promotes the five core values of the YMCA: caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith as well as upholds our service standards of welcoming, connecting, supporting, and inviting. Regardless of primary assignment, this position is expected to rotate between all YMCA pool locations.

  • You'll support the commitment of the YMCA to child abuse prevention by:
  • Report any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor.
  • Follow all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children.
  • Report any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor.
  • Complete all child abuse prevention training as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Meets and maintains all essential functions of professionalism as a Lifeguard or Swim Instructor when working as a Lifeguard or Swim Instructor.
  2. Be a positive YMCA role model for the entire aquatics program by modeling:
    • The YMCA core values: Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility & Faith
    • The YMCA service standards: We Welcome, We Connect, We Support, We Invite
  3. Works closely with new aquatics staff to help with acclimation and department orientation.
  4. Assists in performing quick checks and audits of active lifeguard and swim instructor staff as needed.
  5. Assists with office paperwork including maintaining electronic records of pool chemicals, pool attendance sheets and other administrative tasks.
  6. Assists with special events, pool coverage, and programming, e.g., swim lessons, as needed or directed.
  7. Participates in an on-call schedule with fellow Aquatics Leads to provide on-call lifeguard coverage in the event of a staffing emergency.
  8. Assists with timesheets and payroll as needed.
  9. Assists with keeping staff contact information up to date and available for everyone to use.
  10. Ensures a strong focus on character development and diversity, equity and inclusion throughout programming.
  11. Reports damaged equipment or safety hazards promptly.
  12. Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Rock River Valley.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, First Aid, and emergency oxygen administration.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent required.
  • Current YMCA Swim Instructor or equivalent preferred, or achieved within 60 days of hire.
  • Child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate aquatics skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Praesidium Academy trainings.
  • Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations.
  • Proven track record of developing authentic and deepened relationships with others.

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

1 Position
Part Time, Non-Exempt
Northeast Family YMCA
Wednesdays 3:30 - 7:00 pm
Saturdays 8:30 am - 2:00 pm
Plus 3 hours of flexible time per week
Additional hours lifeguarding or teaching swim lessons may be available in a non-lead capacity.
$15.75 per hour

Regardless of primary assignment, this position may be required to travel between sites as needed.
